# Beyond Participation: Newman-style development assessment

## What is being assessed

The proposal concerns divine action: how an underived source could freely and knowingly cause this finite creation without acquiring intrinsic actuality. It distinguishes intrinsic actuality, capacity to act, and actual intentional action. Intentional control and genuine alternatives are added premises. Awareness of one’s own action, adequate disclosure of its effect, and epistemic warrant are further knowledge premises. Describing an intended effect does not establish the choice or the knowledge requiring explanation.

This is a modern constructive development. Anselm, Aquinas, Scotus, Augustine, Dionysius, and Maximus are principal exemplars at particular joints; Bonaventure, Nyssa, Eriugena, and Przywara provide continuity and stress tests. They set no ceiling on inquiry. Contemporary arguments and new distinctions can materially improve the account. They also cannot erase historical contradictions or create an ecclesial claim that the resulting model is defined doctrine.

## Newman’s actual notes

The project consulted *An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine*, chapter V, through Gutenberg #35110. Its notes are preservation of type, continuity of principles, power of assimilation, logical sequence, anticipation of its future, conservative action upon its past, and chronic vigour. The chapter’s opening notes their varying cogency, independence, and applicability. Their use here is analogical methodology, not ecclesial certification.

### Preservation of type

The type to conserve is a genuinely uncreated, non-receptive source and really actual, finite, distinct expressions. Neither a source partition nor creature-created divine completion is introduced. Voluntary communication should remain real communication; a merely verbal creator-description would not preserve the problem’s type.

Provisional assessment: the proposed intentional action preserves this type if it is genuinely grounded in active source agency while introducing no acquired divine constituent. Whether that ontology succeeds is not assumed.

### Continuity of principles

Created actuality continues to be sourced. Noncomposition remains conditional upon constitution-grounding rather than inferred from nonpartition alone. Non-exhaustion remains insufficient for freedom. Cognitive direction remains source-first rather than an effect supplying divine actuality.

An actual voluntary action is openly admitted as an additional, irreducible fact. Its contingency does not by itself reverse source underivation; nevertheless, a critic may argue that this particular intention adds intrinsic determination. That argument must be addressed, rather than excluded by describing the intention as a relation to its effect.

### Power of assimilation

Exemplar intelligibility, active rational power, live contingency, and reflexive cognition solve distinct jobs. Their assimilation is fruitful only if those jobs remain distinguishable. Scotist formal distinction, Thomistic attribute identity, and Palamite uncreated energies are not assimilated by declaring them the same ontology.

The account can retrieve an author’s insight while declining the author’s surrounding explanation. Such a departure must be named. In particular, a irreducible action interpreted as a real relation should not be retrospectively attributed to Aquinas merely because his doctrine of relations supplies resources for non-reception.

### Logical sequence

The actual sequence is branching. Underivation plus KD yield noncomposition. Separately, a rational-volitional account motivates optional outward expression; an explicit modal extension supplies alternatives; intentional control distinguishes authorship from a spontaneous outcome. A further premise connects intention to the actual effect, and warrant connects the agent’s awareness to knowledge.

No logical arrow establishes God’s existence, every stronger simplicity thesis, or omniscience. The sequence is intelligible precisely because its added commitments are visible.

### Anticipation of its future

Earlier texts anticipate aspects: knowing effects through the source, knowing possibilities without producing all of them, the distinction between end and optional means, and relative predication without an acquired intrinsic accident. They do not thereby anticipate this exact language or prove the combined scheme.

An antecedent passage is evidence of continuity only within its actual scope. Historical anticipation is not a warrant to backdate a contemporary answer to modal truthmaking.

### Conservative action upon its past

The original participation grammar remains usable. The new page does not pretend that stronger agency results had already been contained in reception or measure. It preserves the first noncomposition theorem while revealing an alternative route under the stronger assumptions of a no-creation alternative and the same constituent profile across possible outcomes.

It also preserves open cases rather than resolving them by stipulation. If a rival permits intrinsic intentional variation without composition, that possibility is not dismissed before the stronger simplicity premise is defended.

### Chronic vigour

This new architecture has no demonstrated long historical endurance. Countermodel resistance and conceptual fruitfulness are provisional analogues, not the seventh note itself. A temporary lack of elementary formal contradiction is especially insufficient to show chronic vigour or metaphysical truth.

## Continuity and explanatory success are separate

A proposal can be historically continuous and still fail to explain its central fact. The proposed action must involve actual intelligent control rather than merely restate that A exists. Awareness of one’s own action must disclose the actual intention, rather than merely a capacity that remains the same across possible outcomes. The proposed primitive resources must be independently intelligible and warranted.

Conversely, going beyond an author’s vocabulary need not be arbitrary invention. New distinctions can expose an inferential burden that older accounts treated implicitly. The present development is legitimate as a candidate inquiry insofar as it preserves the inherited constraints, proceeds by explicit additions, and remains answerable to rival explanations.

## Verdict

This is a provisional candidate development of an explanatory grammar. It has not established full classical simplicity, a complete modal-collapse solution, or a theory of every contingent divine cognitive fact. Its positive achievement is to isolate the agency and epistemic resources a source-first account requires and test their separability in disclosed sparse models. If those resources cannot be defended without compromising the conserved principles, the development must revise or reject them rather than declare the problem solved.
